When it stops recognizing the fob, the cause is usually a weak coin cell first and a pairing fault second, with the G-chip or H-chip generation in the mix. The earlier GX470 is a turn-key truck rather than push-button, so on that generation the start system is about the bladed key and its chip. We verify lock, unlock, and start all respond before we leave.

Key Differences Between GX Generations

The GX470 from 2003-2009 uses a TOY43 / TOY44 blade with a 4D67 transponder chip in a remote-head key, where the cut blade and the remote share one body. The chip has to be enrolled to the immobilizer, so a blank cut on a machine alone will work the lock but will not let the engine run.

The GX460 from 2010-2023 moved to a proximity smart key with a TOY48 emergency blade and a G-chip or H-chip, on the HYQ14ACX or HYQ14FBA fob. The wrinkle on this long-running generation is the chip type: it changed during the run, and a fob with the wrong chip generation will not authenticate even when the blade and the FCC look right. Matching the chip as well as the fob to your specific year is the step that decides whether the key works.

Replacing GX Keys When You Have None

Losing every working key to a GX is a different job from copying a spare, but one we handle on-site. On the GX470 we read the immobilizer, cut a fresh TOY43 / TOY44 blade, and enroll the 4D67 chip. On the GX460 the programmer reads the smart-key system and enrolls a new proximity fob, with the right G-chip or H-chip generation for your year.

Battery vs Programming on Your GX Fob

Before assuming the worst, rule out a weak battery. On the GX470 a tired coin cell in the remote head stops the buttons from locking the doors at a distance, though the transponder that starts the car runs separately. On the GX460 a weak fob battery is the most common reason it makes you hold the fob to the start button or stops unlocking on touch.

A true programming fault is different. If a fresh battery does not help, if the key turns but the engine will not crank, or if a security light stays lit, the chip or fob needs to be re-paired to the vehicle.
