How Ridgeline Key Systems Changed Over the Years
The 2006-2014 Ridgeline uses an HO01 blade with an ID46 transponder chip in a remote-head key, where the metal blade and the remote buttons live in one molded unit (FCC OUCG8D-380H-A or N5F-S0084A). It is a turn-key truck: you put the key in the ignition and twist, and the chip has to be read for the engine to start.
The 2017-2025 redesign dropped that bladed remote-head key entirely and moved to proximity push-to-start on the HON66 emergency blade (FCC KR5V2X or KR5T44). Here the metal blade is only a backup hidden in the fob, and the truck starts from a button. Because the system changed completely at the redesign, a first-generation owner can easily order the wrong style, which is why we confirm the generation before any cutting.
Ridgeline Fob: Battery Problem or Programming Problem?
Before assuming the worst, rule out the battery. The proximity Ridgeline fobs run on a CR2032 coin cell, and a weak one is the most common reason the remote stops responding from a distance or the truck asks you to hold the fob against the start button. The remote-head keys on the early trucks also use a coin cell for the buttons, and a fresh one often brings them back.
A real programming fault is different. If a new battery does not help, if the key turns or the button presses but the engine will not start, or if a security light stays lit, the issue is on the immobilizer side and the key needs to be re-paired to the truck. A counter battery swap cannot do that.
Push-to-Start and Proximity Keys on the Ridgeline
From the 2017 redesign onward the Ridgeline uses a proximity fob with push-to-start: with the fob in a pocket or bag, the doors unlock on touch and the truck starts from the button.
